Aung San Suu Kyi banned from election platform
    Trinidad Times

In Myanmar, a new law may force the National League for Democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, out of the party.
In Myanmar, a new law may force the National League for Democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, out of her party.

The Mynamar government has decreed that anyone serving a prison term cannot be a party member, with parties failing to obey the law to be abolished.

The detained leader was sentenced to three years in jail in August over an incident in which a US man swam to her lakeside home and stayed overnight.

He had apparently tried to warn her about incidents he had imagined in a dream.

While her sentence was commuted by Myanmar leader, Than Shwe, the new law now only gives the NLD sixty days to register as a party if it wants to take part in this year's elections.

The party won Myanmar's last elections in 1990 under Ms Suu Kyi, but the military regime annulled the result.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been in detention for 14 of the subsequent 20 years.

Aung San Suu Kyi out of Myanmar election process

Wow, this is really GREAT NEWS! Hopefully, this will gradually set a precedence where BANKERS CANNOT BUY ELECTIONS UNDER THE PRETENTIOUS NAMES OF DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM, HUMAN RIGHTS, OR LIBERATIONS.

WOW, I’m amazed by how unrelated to the story your post is. This is the furthest thing from great news, it is a great leap backwards for Myanmar and democracy in that country. Aung San Suu Kyi is the modern-day Mandela.

She want her dream to come true ,to be in power as president of Burma.Another Asian woman who would like to elected to control the country. It is for herself , not for the country. Good Luck.

Im totally agree with the post of Unregistered 7..YES she is the modern day Mandela, the courage, tenacity, and selfless dedication she has given to try and bring democracy to Burma,is unquestioned..I admire her like no other,,if there is one person in the world i would be so grateful to meet,,it would be AUNG SAN SUU KYI..posts from people like maung maung are obviously supporters of the military dictatorship..

What did she contributed and what she can do?

She is not proven in any field, but she got married to a M15 spy. In USA this is treason.

I don’t know squat about Aung San Suu Kyi, but she is the National League for Democracy leader and it seems that a large percent of the ppl of Myanmar wanted her to keep her post. Sounds like the Myanmar government is also a military regime, meaning a dick-tatorship. I’ll research Myanmar & the ppl tonite & determine how screwed up the government is.

    what burma needs

old chap, the wogs need the British. Gin slings with tiffin, what, and out with the swagger stick, to lambast the charlies when they’re not chop-chop, what? Frankly, a lot of countries could do with old raj, what, with the riot act and the police baton/rattan and somerset maughan loitering (ahem) in the shadows.

Out of the election? What a surprise! Good old democratic Myanmar. Stupid idiots.

Let corrupt US cngressmen and M16 rule Myanmar

By proping up an untrained administrator like Ang San, it is no different from selling out to her supporters in the corrupt US congress and former greedy slave master in UK. By the way, British rule Myanmar with brutality for two hundred years, they have every inch of the land in Asia surveyed and strategic area marked. That is why they have the guts to challenge any Asian country that dare to go too independent of their control. Myanmar should divert the attention by supporting Argentina to liberate Falkland island.

I say chaps, one of the bounders is flapping his gums. Rangoon under the british was prosperous and free. Give the blighter 12 with the heavy cane, the blackguard. then serve me a tiger under the tree and kick the punkah wallah, would you? Jolly decent of you. People do not rule alone you wally, Aung San would have plenty of help. Do you think the miltary fools currently in power are 'trained administrators/

Wow! She is a female Mandela

Burma’s diverse population has played a major role in defining its politics, history and demographics in modern times, and the country continues to struggle to mend its ethnic tensions. The military has dominated government since General Ne Win led a coup in 1962 that toppled the civilian government of U Nu. Burma remains under the tight control of the military-led State Peace and Development Council. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aung San Suu Kyi: In the 1990 general election, Suu Kyi was elected Prime Minister, as leader of the winning National League for Democracy party, which won 59% of the vote and 394 of 492 seats. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She has remained under house arrest in Myanmar for almost 14 out of the past 20 years. Suu Kyi was the recipient of the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the Government of India. She is frequently called Daw Aung San Suu Kyi; Daw is not part of her name, but is an honorific similar to madam for order, revered women, literally meaning aunt. Awards: Thorolf Rafto Memorial Prize (1990) Sakharov Prize (1990) Nobel Peace Prize (1991) Simon Bolivar International Prize (1992 Jawaharlal Nehru Award (1993) Prize For Freedom of the Liberal International (1995) Honorary Companion of the Order of Australia (1996) Freedom of Dublin City, Republic of Ireland (1999) Presidential Medal of Freedom (2000) UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance & Non-Violence (2002) Gwangju Prize for Human Rights (2004) Olof Palme Prize (2005) Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from Memorial University of Newfoundland (2004) Freedom from Fear award (2006) Honorary Canadian citizenship (2007) Honorary President of the LSESU (2007) Doctorate of Letters (honoris causa) from Colgate University (2008) Congressional Gold Medal (2008) Premi Internacional Catalunya (2008) Freedom Of Glasgow (2009) Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation (2009) Honorary Doctor of Laws from University of Ulster in recognition of her services to human rights (2009)

Yes, a lot of help from whom?

Ang San will get a lot of help from people who is now in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is it really a good deal? As for awards, even Palestinian leaders Arafat got an award when he listen to the slave owners.
    By goomba, 03-11-10, 12:59 AM
Probably 8 out of 10 people who stand for election are not trained administrators. The people elect them (the 'elected' officers,) to represent their interests. The established administration has 'salaried officers' who are experts and advise the elected. awards: many glittering medals on chests of militray fools that mean nothing.

Never ever trust western press or you will enter into another war

Like in Iraq and Afghanistan. White men’s press are run by racist people except a few like Walter Crokite. And the product of these garbage from the press produce generation of brainwash kids who think all other people are fool except them.
